After signing the Small Business Friendly Council Charter earlier this year, the Moyne Shire Council was thrilled to host the Victorian Small Business Commissioner Lynda McAlary-Smith last week.

The charter is a commitment between Moyne Shire Council and the Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) to work together to create fair and competitive trading environment for small businesses. In her visit Commissioner McAlary-Smith heard from the local business community about the issues confronting local small business people and raised awareness of the available supports.

During the visit Commissioner McAlary-Smith met with business owners, Councillors and Moyne Shire's Economic Development Advisory Committee, before visiting a number of businesses to talk about the challenges faced locally as they work on recovering from the pandemic.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Commerce Moyne's Business Breakfast event and all businesses who participating in hosting Commissioner McAlary-Smith.

The Victorian Government is helping Victorian businesses to cut their energy bills, with up to $8,500 off the upfront cost of a solar system installation through the expansion of eligibility criteria of the $47.5 million Solar for Business Program.

More Victorian businesses will be able to take control of their energy bills with businesses with up to 50 employees able to access a rebate of up to $3,500 to install solar panels, an increase from the current 20 employee threshold.

For the first time, businesses will also be able to apply for zero interest loans of between $1,000 and $5,000 to reduce the initial outlay for solar installation.

Businesses will be able to access the expanded program from Friday, 29 April, with the households able to apply for multiple solar products from mid-May.

Introducing interest-free loans

In line with the existing rebate, the interest-free loan can be applied up to an amount based on the system cost. The loan amount can range from $1,000 to a maximum of $5,000. If the total system costs less than $7,000, there will be no upfront cost.

The loan can be repaid over 12 months, 24 months or sooner in one lump sum payment. The rebate and loan amounts will be deducted from the cost of the system – ensuring business owners only have to pay any outstanding balance once the system is installed

Changes to eligibility criteria

Businesses with less than 50 full time equivalent (FTE) employees can now apply, up from businesses with less than 20 employees. All entity types, including charities and not-for-profit organisations, are eligible for the Solar for Business rebates providing they meet the following eligibility criteria:

Be the owner of a business that employs at least one person, not including the business owner, and less than 50 full time equivalent (FTE) employees.
